Where Does All My Money Go?

You get paid, pay your bills, buy groceries, fill up the car, and take care of everyday life.

Then you check your account and wonder, Where did all my money go?

You don't remember spending that much. There wasn't one big shopping trip or expensive purchase. But somehow, the money is gone.

Why does this keep happening?

Often, it's because we pay attention to the big expenses but overlook how much the smaller, everyday expenses add up.

Your mortgage or rent, car payment, and utilities are easy to remember. They're usually predictable, and you know they're coming.

But what about everything else?

A quick stop at the store. Lunch because you didn't have time to pack something. A subscription you forgot about. A few things you ordered online. An extra grocery trip because you ran out of something.

None of these purchases necessarily feels like a big deal on its own. And some of them are things you genuinely need or enjoy.

The problem isn't always what you're buying. It's that you may not realize how much you're spending in certain areas until you look at the total.

There's another piece to this, too.

Sometimes your money is doing exactly what you've asked it to do, but you haven't decided whether those things are still your priorities.

Maybe convenience spending has increased because life is busy. Maybe subscriptions made sense when you signed up but aren't being used anymore. Or maybe rising costs have quietly changed what your normal expenses look like.

So where do you start?

Instead of trying to cut everything back, start by getting curious.

Look at the last 30 days of spending. Group similar purchases together and add them up. You might be surprised by what you find.

Then ask yourself:

  • What spending am I happy with?

  • What surprised me?

  • Is there anything I'd rather use that money for?

You don't have to stop spending on things you enjoy. The goal is to make sure your money is going where you actually want it to go.

Because once you can see where it's going, you can start making different choices.
